How To Make the Most of Your Visit to Alfred University

There is a huge difference between viewing a university online and actually being on its campus. An in-person visit can tell you much more than scrolling through photos because you are able to experience student life from the inside. A campus tour helps the university feel less distant and allows you to feel more like part of the community. It can answer your questions, address your concerns, and take a step toward making college feel like home.

To help you prepare for a visit, we created this guide outlining what you should do before your tour, what to pay attention to while you’re here, and tips on what to do after the visit.

Before the Tour

A successful college tour starts with careful preparation. First, it’s helpful to decide which type of tour will be most beneficial for you. Alfred University offers several visit options designed for different preferences and needs, including individual visits, group visits, open house events, and virtual visits. Most students choose individual visits, where they join a small group led by a student ambassador and have a chance to meet with an admissions counselor to discuss specific details.

Signing up for a tour is very easy and can be completed through the admissions page on Alfred University’s website. You’ll choose the tour type that interests you most, select a date, and complete a short form with general information about yourself and your academic interests. After submitting the form, you’ll receive a confirmation email with details about your visit. If you are visiting with a group from your high school, a teacher or counselor usually coordinates the tour in advance.

While waiting for tour day, it’s normal to feel both anxious and excited. A great way to use this time is by researching Alfred University. Explore student life through social media and different sections of the university website. This can help you better understand what to expect from AU and allow you to come prepared with thoughtful questions. It’s also helpful to plan your academic interests ahead of time—decide which facilities you want to see or reach out to departments and professors to schedule a meeting. Having clear goals will make your tour a more useful tool in deciding whether Alfred is the right fit for you.

While You're Here

From the start of your tour, treat it as an opportunity to fully experience Alfred University—not just see it. To get the most out of your visit, stay engaged and curious. Ask questions, share your interests, and voice any concerns. Tour guides are always ready to help and are happy to dive deeper into the parts of campus you care most about.

Hear It From A Student

Oleh Zhuk, student ambassador at Alfred University

Campus tours at Alfred are especially unique because they’re led by current students who understand what visitors are feeling and know which spaces best represent campus life.

"Students can feel free to stop me at any point during the tour and ask any questions, or even ask to see a specific place they’re interested in," shared Student Ambassador Oleh Zhuk. "I take each tour very seriously, and I’m trying to give all of myself on that tour."

One standout location many students love is the neon lab in Harder Hall—one of the few studios like it in the country. Oleh shared that many visitors mention it as a highlight and say it helped them feel confident about choosing Alfred.

Be sure to take notes during your tour so you can reflect later on what stood out to you. It’s also a great idea to explore the village of Alfred. Visit local businesses, meet members of the community, and get a sense of the town’s culture. Doing so will help you better imagine your life as a student here.

As your visit comes to an end, take time to reflect on whether you can picture yourself at Alfred. Pay attention to the atmosphere, trust your instincts, and consider whether this is a place where you can grow both personally and academically. A campus tour isn’t just about gathering information—it’s a powerful tool for finding the right fit.

Reflect and Decide

After a day full of new impressions, it’s common to feel overwhelmed. Taking time to reflect can help organize your thoughts and give you clarity moving forward. Many students find it helpful to write down their thoughts while they’re still fresh, including what stood out most or what surprised them.

Creating a pros-and-cons list is another helpful way to compare what matters most to you. Compare your initial expectations with your actual experience—you may discover new opportunities you hadn’t anticipated. If you’re visiting multiple schools, reflecting on each visit will make comparisons easier and more accurate.

Most importantly, look for a place where you feel welcomed, comfortable, and excited about your future.

Ready to Explore?

A campus tour is an essential part of preparing for college, and putting thought into the experience can make a big difference. Treat your visit as an opportunity to explore, imagine your future, and learn about yourself as much as the campus. We can’t wait to welcome you to Alfred University. Schedule your tour today!
