Dying is not easy, but it needn't be this hard: Care versus choice in end-of-life narratives
Chloe Hansen, Clinical Asst. Prof. of English/Director of the Writing Center, will discuss the ideal of the good death in (pre-COVID) end-of-life narratives. Taking seriously the idea that public narratives can shape our expectations of medical situations, she argues that emphasizing care–rather than the emphasis on choice found in many contemporary discourses–may shift understandings of good versus bad dying, as well as our hopes and fears about living in the face of death. The Bergren Forum, sponsored by the Division of Human Studies and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, will take place from 12:10 to 1:00 on Thursdays in Nevins Theatre, Powell Campus Center. Bring a brown bag lunch if you wish. Coffee and tea will be provided. For further information contact John D’Angelo.
