The Politics of Repetition and Irony in Postwar Iranian Art
This presentation explores how Iranian artist Bahman Mohassess (1931-2010) used parody in his 1960s paintings and theatrical productions to challenge both Western cultural dominance and Iranian political authority. Through a close look at his 1965 painting and his staging of Luigi Pirandello's Henry IV, the talk examines how Mohassess transformed traditional images of power — particularly the mounted ruler — into ironic commentary during a turbulent period in Iran's history.The Bergren Forum, sponsored by the Division of Human Studies and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, will take place from 12:10 to 1:00 on Thursdays in Nevins Theatre, Powell Campus Center.
