Exhibition features contemporary, historical ceramic pieces from permanent collection

“Global Flows: Ceramics from the Permanent Collection,” an ongoing exhibition curated by Meghen Jones, assistant professor of art history at Alfred University (AU), will be on display until Friday, Aug. 7 in the Schein-Joseph International Museum of Ceramic Art, Binns-Merrill Hall.

The exhibition features contemporary works from artists such as Michael Cardew, Karen Karnes, and Cindy Sherman as well as historical pieces including a pre-Columbian jaguar effigy vessel from Costa Rica, a 17-century Shigraki jar, and a 19-century Sunderland plaque.

Ph.D. candiate earns national materials science award for x-ray analysis research

Peter Metz, a Ph.D. candidate in Alfred University’s (AU) Kazuo Inamori School of Engineering, will receive the 2015 Jerome B. Cohen Award from the International Centre for Diffraction Data. The award, along with a $1,000 check, will be presented at the 64th annual Denver X-ray Conference, Aug. 5 in Westminster, CO.

Illinois organist/carillonneur to close out summer '15 Wingate recital series

Sue Bergren, principal organist at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, Naperville, IL will be the final 2015 guest for Alfred University’s (AU) Wingate Memorial Summer Carillon Recital Series Tuesday, July 28 beginning at 7 p.m. at the University’s Davis Memorial Carillon.

Bergren is active as a carillon recitalist and regularly performs on the Naperville Millennium Carillon.

Young Pianist Gagliano wins MostArts competition grand prize

A 13-year-old from Washington, D.C. took home Grand Prize honors in Alfred University’s (AU) Young Pianist Competition, which highlighted the weeklong (July 5-11) MostArts Festival 2015.

Avery Gagliano received a $10,000 cash award after judges selected her over seven other finalists in the competition open to high school students ages 12-18. Gagliano also received an additional $500 prize as winner of the Audience Favorite Award for her Thursday night performance of the “Mozart Concerto No. 20.”

The $2,500 second prize was awarded to Victor Xie, a 17-year-old from Palo Alto, CA. He also received an additional $500 for his Friday evening performance as the Audience Favorite.
