Residence Life hosting Red Cross blood drive Sept. 8 in Knight Club

On Tuesday, Sept. 8 Residence Life at Alfred University will host a blood drive from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Knight Club, Powell Campus Center.  Faculty, staff, students, and community members are all invited to participate. All presenting donors will receive a coupon for a free haircut from Sport Clips.

Confucius Institute at AU hosting two-day Tai Chi and Health Conference in October

The Confucius Institute at Alfred University (CIAU) invites local and regional community members to a two-day Tai Chi & Health Conference Friday and Saturday, Oct. 2-3 featuring Tai Chi Grandmaster Yu An-ren of Changsha, China.

The conference will also include lectures and demonstrations on tai chi, acupuncture, acupressure, and by Master Liu Gui-Fang and Master George Samuels, as well as Steve Crosby, AU professor of theater; Dr. Zhaojun Wang; Kevin Ferst, licensed acupuncturist; Sarah Nelson; and Chris Jordan.

Bergren Forum program to take participants to 'A Potter's Paradise' in Japan

Alfred University’s (AU) longstanding lunchtime series, the Bergren Forum, continues Thursday, Sept. 10, at 12:10 p.m. in Nevins Theater, Powell Campus Center.  The program is free and open to the public.

In her talk, “A Potter’s Paradise: Ceramics and Craft Ideology in Modern Japan,” Meghen M. Jones, assistant professor of art history, will explore the historical, cultural, and ideological factors making ceramics a universally recognized and prized form of creative expression in Japan. Business moguls, museum curators, the imperial family and, of course, master potters are all part of this dynamic history stretching from the late nineteenth century to today.

Institute for Electronic Arts to showcase digital media artwork in new exhibition

The Fosdick-Nelson Gallery at Alfred University (AU) will present “Typology/Morphology – Work from the Institute for Electronic Arts (IEA)” opening Friday, Sept. 4 and running through Friday, Oct. 9. 

 “Typology/Morphology” highlights artwork produced at the IEA in the School of Art & Design at AU. Approaching its 20th year, the institute was established to support artists working in digital media. The exhibition features the works of Cory Arcangel, Brandon Ballengée, Xu Bing, Robert Brinker, Lawrence Brose, Diana Cooper, Matilda Essig, FLATSITTER, Lindsey Glover, Ann Hamilton, Phil Hastings, Oliver Herring, Xiang Jing, Pamela Joseph, Luftwerk, Thane Lund, Traci Molloy, Joseph Nechvatal, Chi Peng, Sondra Perry, Janet Pritchard, Kiki Smith, Emil Schult, Ari Tabei, Woody Vasulka, and Huang Yan.
