Violist & Guest Conductor

Steve Thomas

Steven Thomas, a founding member of the MostArts Festival, serves as Conductor of the Festival's Young Pianist Competition Concerto Concerts and plays first violin in the orchestra. He joined the music faculty here at Alfred University this year teaching piano. Other college teaching experience includes Houghton University and the University at Buffalo. Steve and his wife Martha have lived here in the Southern Tier since Steve’s retirement from public school teaching. They produced Vivace String Camp at Houghton University and subsequently settled here.

Prior to moving to Allegany County, Steve directed the high school orchestra programs in Amherst and Williamsville and conducted the Amherst Symphony. He is first violinist of the Oakgrove String Quartet and was Concertmaster at Shea’s Buffalo Performing Arts Center.

While he doesn’t play piano at MostArts Steve is a busy piano accompanist with a resume of collaborations that include many of the world’s great artists as well as scores of students. Currently Steve is assistant director and pianist for the Fillmore High School Musicals and also acts as choral accompanist and pit pianist in the Perry Central Schools. When not making music Steve loves spending time with his wife and family, riding his bike and flying a beautiful light sport airplane.
