Students in Alfred University’s education program are required to complete two or more teacher certification exams— taken during their senior year or after graduation—in order to become certified to teach in New York State. The requirement is in addition to completion of three state workshops and the conferral of their degree. According to the state Education Department’s most recent report, from 2024, 98 percent of Alfred students passed their licensing exams.

When Alfred University Math Professor Amanda Lipnicki took up knitting as an undergraduate student, she didn’t immediately recognize how mathematics and geometry underlay the patterns of stitches holding together any knitted or crocheted surface.

Alfred University sophomore Abby Atnafe, a native of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, has been meeting regularly in Myers Hall since the beginning of the 2025-26 academic year with other undergraduate students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, collaborating on a shared passion for computer programming.

“Fihankra,” an exhibition by ceramic artist Eugene Ofori Agyei, will open Thursday, Feb. 12 at the Alfred Ceramic Art Museum. The museum will host a reception from 5 to 7 pm to accompany the opening, and the exhibition will be on display through July 19.

The deadline to submit nominations for Alfred University Alumni Awards is fast approaching. Nominations for the honors—which help recognize alumni who are making a difference, breaking boundaries, and giving back—must be completed by January 31, 2026.

In recognition of America250, our nation’s 250th birthday, the Alfred University Reunion Bikers have chosen the historic Saratoga Springs, NY, as their pedal off point for this year’s journey back to campus. The area offers a unique variety of historical, cultural, and recreational opportunities. The city’s official slogan is “Health, History, and Horses.”

An op-ed by Mark Zupan, Alfred University president, was published over the weekend in the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle. In the piece, written just more than two weeks after the U.S. military captured Nicholas Maduro, president of Venezuela, Zupan discusses how the once-prosperous South American nation was led into economic ruin by its elected government.
