CounselingPsychology.org, an organization that provides educational resources for aspiring counselors and psychologists, has released its 2027 New York State rankings of graduate degree programs in counseling and Alfred University is among the institutions listed.
In its Best Master’s in Counseling in New York list, CounselingPsychology.org ranks Alfred University fifth. Factors considered in formulating the rankings include: Pell Grant enrollment share, net price after aid, online and hybrid access, tuition and fees charged, and median graduate debt.
“The programs (recognized) are accredited, keep costs within reach for New York students, and most can be completed without leaving a job,” CounselingPsychology.org notes.
Alfred University's school counseling program is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs, an independent agency that accredits master's and doctoral counseling degree programs in the United States.
In its profiles of ranked schools, CounselingPsychology.org says Alfred University is “known for its applied training, with more than 700 hours of practicum and internship work in area schools.”
The organization noted that Alfred students can shift into a school or mental health counseling specialty early in the program, and graduates qualify for New York State provisional certification with reciprocity in other states. It also pointed to graduate assistantships that help reduce tuition for full-time students.
Alfred University offers Master of Science in Education degrees in mental health counseling and school counseling. The degree programs are housed in the university’s School of Graduate and Continuing Studies. In addition to hosting the degree programs on its main campus, Alfred University also offers master’s degree programs in school counseling and mental health counseling at satellite campuses in the New York City area, through its AU-NYC program.
