Students in the Cost Accounting course taught by Ali Coskun, associate professor of accountancy in the College of Business at Alfred University, have earned the Data Analytics & Visualization Fundamentals Certificate® from the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA).
The certification program introduces students to the growing role of data analytics in business and accounting, helping them understand how data can be used to evaluate organizational performance and support informed strategic decision-making. Through this online course, students engage in hands-on, experiential learning using case scenarios and practical exercises designed to build real-world analytical skills.
According to Coskun, the certification strengthens students’ understanding of how emerging technologies, analytics, and visualization tools are transforming the accounting profession.
“Students gain valuable insight into how data analytics can influence organizational strategy and how effective visualizations can communicate business information to support decision-making,” Coskun said. “The program enhances their analytical thinking, Excel proficiency, visualization skills, and ability to interpret and present data in meaningful ways.”
This year, 16 students in the Cost Accounting course earned the certification. Since the program was incorporated into the curriculum four years ago, 56 students at Alfred University have completed the IMA Data Analytics & Visualization program. To earn certification, students complete four online modules followed by a final assessment. The program emphasizes experiential learning through case studies, practical applications, and knowledge checks that reinforce technical and analytical competencies.
Students begin working toward certification during the spring semester, with their membership in the Institute of Management Accountants funded by the Accounting Club. Data analytics concepts are integrated into coursework.
