A feature story broadcast Monday (July 20) on Rochester ABC television affiliate WHAM put a spotlight on a recent project organized by Alfred University’s Division of Chemistry to clean up the area along Route 21 outside Alfred.
The story, “Keeping Communities Clean,” was part of WHAM’s Bright Spot, a regular feature that lauds a person or group that tries to make a difference in the lives of others. This episode focused on the effort by faculty in the Division of Chemistry and others who braved the smoke and haze caused by the Canadian wildfires to pick up litter along Route 21.
The Division of Chemistry keeps a stretch of Route 21 under the New York State Department of Transportation’s Adopt a Highway program.
Among those participating in the cleaning up of litter along Route 21 were Division of Chemistry faculty Garrett McGowan, professor of chemistry, Andrew Eklund, professor of chemistry, John D’Angelo, professor of chemistry, and Zachary Knepp, assistant professor of chemistry; students Katie Seamens and Pedro Pinto; and alumna Jillian Houck ’26 (bachelor’s in biology).
