MS/Biomaterials Engineering Thesis Defense- Preston Guynup

The Inamori School of Engineering graduate student, Preston Guynup will defend his MS/Biomaterials Engineering thesis on Friday, May 1st in Binns-Merrill Hall Room 106 at 10:20A.M

Title of Thesis: Gallium Doped Hydroxyapatite Structure, Dissolution, and Thermal Properties.

Copies of Preston's thesis will be on display in BINNS, 160 and McMahon in the CACT Office.

Hydroxyapatite (HA) is a widely utilized biomaterial for orthopedic implants; however, its clinical efficacy is often limited by implant-associated infections and phase degradation during high-temperature manufacturing. Doping HA with gallium (Ga3+) introduces both broad-spectrum antimicrobial and osteogenic properties. Despite its clinical promise, the precise mechanisms of Ga3+ incorporation and its effects on the material's thermal and dissolution properties have remained unclear. This research investigates the structural, thermal, and aqueous-dissolution properties of a novel Ga3+ doped hydroxyapatite series synthesized using wet-chemical precipitation. Structural characterization revealed that Ga3+incorporates into the bulk HA lattice through a two-part pathway involving an A-type carbonate and oxyapatite charge-compensation mechanism. Additionally, nucleation-aggregation-agglomeration theory drives the formation of a distinct core-shell morphology, in which the crystalline Ga3+ doped HA core is encased by an amorphous, highly reactive, hydrated gallium and calcium carbonate surface layer. This unique structure dictates the material's functional properties. Thermally, the intermediate doping concentration demonstrated unusual lattice stability, resisting phase degradation up to 1050 C, which is a critical advantage for high-temperature processing techniques such as plasma-sprayed and hot-isostatically pressed orthopedic coatings. In dynamic physiological environments, the core-shell structure yields a biphasic dissolution profile. The amorphous surface provides a rapid initial burst of multivalent cations, which could be leveraged to precisely control the crosslinking of composite hydrogels, followed by a sustained, long-term release of Ga3+ from the bulk HA within the therapeutic window. Ultimately, this research elucidates a definitive synthesis-structure-property relationship for Ga-HA, presenting a highly tunable, thermally robust, and bioactive biomaterial suited for next-generation, infection-resistant orthopedic applications
