One Village, Two Schools, One Trophy: How We Won the Alfred Cup

Posted By Alfred University

On a campus defined by collaboration, a little friendly rivalry can go a long way. This year, that spirit took center stage as Alfred University and Alfred State College competed in the inaugural Alfred Cup, a year-long athletic competition that brought together student-athletes, fans, and the broader community.

When the final results were announced, Alfred University came out on top, edging Alfred State 12–10 in a close and competitive finish. But the story of the Alfred Cup goes far beyond the final score.

More Than Just Competition

The Alfred Cup tracks head-to-head matchups between varsity teams from both institutions, awarding points throughout the academic year.

From soccer in the fall to lacrosse and track in the spring, each game contributed to the overall standings, creating a season-long sense of anticipation and pride.

The format is simple—two points for a win, one for a tie—but the impact is much bigger. It gives every matchup added meaning, turning individual games into part of a larger shared experience.

Rivalry Rooted in Connection

What makes the Alfred Cup unique is its setting.

Unlike traditional rivalries, Alfred University and Alfred State aren’t separated by miles. They’re located right across the street from one another, connected by a single village and even a single stoplight. That closeness adds something special to the competition.

Students don’t just compete against a distant rival. They see each other in town, share community spaces, and build relationships beyond athletics. The result is a rivalry built as much on mutual respect as it is on competition.

At the heart of the Alfred Cup are the student-athletes themselves.

Throughout the year, teams delivered strong performances across a wide range of sports, contributing to a tightly contested final score.

From dominant wins on the lacrosse field to close matchups in soccer and basketball, each competition highlighted the dedication, resilience, and teamwork of Alfred’s athletes.

For prospective students, it’s a glimpse into what it means to be part of an athletic program that values both performance and community.

Competition that Gives Back

One of the most meaningful aspects of the Alfred Cup is how it extends beyond the field.

During Cup events, students and fans came together to support the local community, collecting more than 400 food and pantry items for the Alfred Area Food Pantry.

In addition, donations raised over $1,200 for the Alfred Almond Community Sports Association. It’s a reminder that school spirit isn’t just about cheering from the sidelines. It’s also about making a positive impact.

Looking Ahead

With the next competition set to begin this fall, students will once again have the chance to take part, whether as athletes, fans, or members of the community.

For prospective students, it’s a window into life at Alfred: a place where academics, athletics, and community are closely connected. Because sometimes, the most meaningful college experiences happen outside the classroom—on the field, in the stands, and in the moments shared along the way.
