Clubs for Passionate Creators

The MediaLab is also home to three clubs open to all students with an interest in video production, writing, broadcasting, graphic design, and more. AUTV is for students interested in video production, everything from filming, acting, and editing. WALF is Alfred’s FM radio station, broadcasting on 89.7 since 1971. Fiat Lux is Alfred’s student-run newspaper, reporting for Alfred’s community for over 100 years.

Creativity for Everybody

The MediaLab isn't just for club members, though. Whether you need to record a video or podcast episode for class or have your own creative project in mind, the MediaLab has the equipment and expertise to help. There are even workshops held by the MediaLab to teach you skills like podcasting, editing, beat production, and more.

Meet the MediaLab Specialist

Ian Bentham manages the MediaLab and its equipment. He makes sure the MediaLab is a resource for everyone by coordinating with students and professors to ensure they have the right skills and tools for the job. Ian's history in TV and radio gives everyone the chance to have a professional production value. He has also expanded the MediaLab’s reach across campus, offering workshops in Herrick Library and helping establish a podcast recording studio in Scholes Library.

“I give them some of the practice and skills that they need, and I’m happy to teach those who want to expand and grow with some of those concepts," said Bentham.

MediaLab production equipment–tripods, microphones, and other essentials are available at Scholes Library for checkout. The Herrick Library Computer Lab also has a high-spec desktop computer loaded with Adobe creative software for editing audio and video. Students can email Ian at [email protected] for additional equipment options, one-on-one training and support, and to learn more about what else the MediaLab offers.

Alfred’s MediaLab is designed for any student with a creative vision they want to make come true. Whether it’s radio, video, or writing, you’ll find tools, expertise and opportunities to learn by doing in the MediaLab.

If you’re interested in hands-on learning, Alfred University has a place for you.
