Experience Alfred’s Hot Dog Day, Frankly the Best Day on Campus

Posted By Cameron Begue

Once a year, the town of Alfred is transformed by music, parades, and festival energy—all for one reason: hot dogs. For more than 50 years, Alfred has taken to the streets for a full day of celebration, fun, and, of course, hot dogs.

Hot Dog Day began in 1972 when students from both Alfred State College and Alfred University came together to organize an event that would raise money for local charities and organizations. The idea was simple: what kind of food could draw a crowd while staying affordable for college students? Hot dogs were the obvious answer. What started as a small gathering has since grown into a massive, community-wide event that raises thousands of dollars for charity and spreads joy as students wrap up the spring semester.

Traditions and Classics

Traditionally, Hot Dog Day takes place on one of the last Saturdays in April, but celebrations last throughout the entire week. Events like the Lunchtime Launch help get students into the spirit early. During this event, teams use rubber bands and DIY contraptions to launch hot dogs across the Brick Lawn. The team that launches a hot dog the farthest wins a basket full of Hot Dog Day merchandise and goodies.

On Friday, the eve of Hot Dog Day, the AU Wellness Center hosts the After Dark Dash 5K. For $15, or $5 for students, participants can enjoy a glowing fun run through Alfred University’s campus. All proceeds from the race support colon cancer research and Allegheny County Cancer Services. Prizes are awarded to the first-place finisher and the participant with the best glow-themed outfit.

Hot Dog Day officially begins with the Wiener Dog Race on the Brick Hall Lawn. Dog owners and spectators gather to watch one of the most popular traditions of the day. While it may be called a Wiener Dog Race, there’s no rule stopping other dogs from joining in on the fun.

Soon after, the festival’s main event, the Hot Dog Day Parade, takes over Main Street. Faculty members, athletic teams, student organizations, and community groups march through town in floats and costumes, tossing goodies to fellow Alfredians lining the sidewalks. Main Street is also filled with local vendors selling crafts, vintage clothing, and plenty of food. Food trucks from nearby favorites like the Old Mill Inn offer a wide variety of meals, ensuring no one goes hungry.

Of course, hot dogs remain the stars of the day. Student-run booths offer regular, kosher, and veggie hot dogs throughout the festival. Hot dogs are purchased using tickets sold around town for $1 each, with each hot dog costing just two tickets and available all day long.

Behind the Scenes

Hot Dog Day is a large collaborative effort coordinated by Alfred University, Alfred State College, and the town of Alfred. Everyone works together to ensure the event runs smoothly and safely. Faculty members join students in the parade, while student clubs and organizations host booths along Main Street.

Student involvement truly makes Hot Dog Day what it is. Each year, the official Hot Dog Day Instagram hosts a design contest to select the next festival logo. This year, freshman Art & Design student Abigail Klein won the contest, earning the chance to have her design featured on t-shirts and promotional materials for the event.

Why It Matters

Hot Dog Day gives the entire Alfred community a chance to relax, connect, and celebrate together. This long-standing festival is a cornerstone of Alfred’s close-knit culture and highlights what makes the town special. Beyond the fun, Hot Dog Day continues its tradition of raising money for local charities.

When you visit Alfred, make sure to experience Hot Dog Day, and become part of its long history of tradition, generosity, and fun.
