Alfred University hosted its annual Spring Career and Grad School Fair on Thursday, Feb. 26, in the Joyce & Walton Center. More than 60 recruiters representing business and industry, government agencies, and graduate schools were on hand to provide information to students and answer questions about potential careers and grad school offerings.
Typically, there have between 250-300 students in attendance at the spring event. Jessica Doner, director of Alfred University’s Career Development Center (CDC), says that many attended Thursday’s fair, drawn by a group of recruiters that represented a wide variety of career opportunities.
“We have a very diverse group of recruiters” at the spring fair. “There really is something for everyone,” she said, noting that recruiters serve companies, agencies, and graduate schools “representative of most all of our degree programs.”
Doner said a special focus was placed on attracting recruiters representing graduate schools and potential employers for graduates of programs in Alfred’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and School of Art and Design.
For Liberal Arts and Sciences, these include employers and graduate schools offering employment and graduate degrees in the areas of science and mathematics; languages and global studies; psychology and education; healthcare and human services; government, law, and public service. For art students, the fair had a number of graduate schools offering programs ranging from art history and museum studies to art education, theater and music.
This marks first time Alfred University hosted both graduate schools and business/industry/government agencies at the spring fair. Last fall, the CDC offered separate career fairs focused on grad schools and business/industry/government.
“Many of our students are on career paths that require an advanced degree,” Doner said of the benefits of having graduate school programs at the fair.
“It has been great,” she said of the university inviting graduate school programs to join potential employers at the fair. “We’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback from students and recruiters.”
