Transitioning to college life is hard for anyone. Students have to get used to living on their own in a new place, adjust to a new lifestyle, and make new friends—all at the same time. This difficult transition can be harder for some students than others. Luckily, at Alfred University, some first‑year students can get a helping hand through the AU Advantage Summer Bridge Program.
Basics of the Program
The AU Advantage Summer Bridge Program is organized by AUA Bridge Coordinator Sarah Pratt. The program is largely made up of students whose applications may have been lacking in some areas but showed great potential in others. The goal of the Summer Bridge Program is to help these students succeed as they transition into college life.
During the four‑week program, students take a major‑specific course—such as writing, pre‑calculus, or portfolio development—alongside a class focused on academic success skills. These classes prepare students for their major and the challenges of college coursework, while also helping them adjust to campus life and connect with fellow students.
Recreation
The Summer Bridge Program helps students get acclimated to college life, and that doesn’t just mean academics. Alfred is surrounded by many opportunities for fun and exploration, and part of the program’s purpose is to introduce students to the entertainment available around them.
Students can expect visits to Alfred University’s Foster Lake, which is perfect for outdoor activities like kayaking, fishing, and walking the trails. The Corning Museum of Glass is another popular destination, offering a breathtaking collection connected to the history, art, and science of glass. In the past, some groups have even spent a day at Six Flags Darien Lake.
Fiat Success Seminar
One of the many advantages of the Summer Bridge Program is the Fiat Success Seminar. These seminars are designed to familiarize students with the many areas of study offered at Alfred University. Professors from a wide range of disciplines lead discussions and activities that introduce students to their fields, from Biology to Finance to Dance.
Alfred University is home to six different schools and colleges, and this kind of cross‑college exposure helps create the unique academic environment Alfred is known for.
Program Highlights
We spoke with AUA Bridge Coordinator Sarah Pratt about some of the program’s highlights. She shared that the major‑specific class students take is one of the most impactful parts of the program, as it helps students become comfortable with both their academic field and the classmates who share it.
Sarah also shared personal stories from past recreational trips, referencing one of President Mark Zupan’s phrases: “living into our place.” This idea is about learning to find fun and meaning in your surroundings. While the village of Alfred is an isolated community, the Summer Bridge Program helps students discover the unique experiences and connections that can only be found by exploring the area together with friends.
