Choosing the right college often comes down to one big question: Who will be teaching me or my student? At Alfred University, our faculty aren’t just educators. They’re innovators, artists, and active contributors to their fields. And sometimes, their expertise takes them far beyond campus. One recent example comes from Associate Professor of Light Sarah Blood, a standout faculty member in our School of Art and Design, who was invited to teach at Arizona State University (ASU) in the fall of 2025.

An Invitation that Reflects Excellence

This exciting opportunity didn’t come out of nowhere. It came from one of Sarah’s own former Alfred University students. Lily Reeves ’15, now an established artist and owner of an interdisciplinary art and design firm in Phoenix, invited her former mentor to ASU to share her expertise with a new community of artists. Reeves completed her M.F.A. at ASU, and the professional connection she maintained with Sarah speaks volumes about the long‑lasting relationships formed here at Alfred.

Not every university can say its faculty are invited to teach at institutions across the country because of the lasting impact they’ve had on their students. But at Alfred University, this kind of story is far from unusual.

Teaching, Creating, and Inspiring in Arizona

Sarah Blood demonstrated advanced neon processes, presented a lecture on her artistic practice, and led a workshop on neon-making techniques during a visit to Arizona State University in the fall of 2025.

During her time at ASU, Professor Blood did far more than teach a class. She became an integral part of the artistic community there by:

  • Delivering a public lecture on her artistic practice
  • Leading a hands‑on workshop in advanced neon‑making techniques
  • Consulting with ASU faculty by sharing teaching resources and advising on studio and curriculum development

Her visit showcased the kind of mentorship and artistic innovation she brings to Alfred students every day.

A Story of Connection and Impact

One of the most powerful aspects of this story is the full‑circle moment between teacher and student. Reeves, once one of Sarah’s first students when she joined Alfred University in 2013, is now a thriving professional in the neon art world. Seeing a former student succeed and then invite her mentor to collaborate speaks to the strong, lasting support network our faculty foster.

As Professor Blood shared, watching her students succeed and contribute to the future of their field is “incredibly rewarding.”

For prospective students and families, this is what Alfred University is all about: students learning from passionate experts who continue to influence their fields, and who stay invested in their students long after graduation.

Why It Matters

When choosing a university, faculty expertise and engagement matter a lot. Here’s what Professor Blood’s achievement highlights for students considering Alfred:

  • You’ll learn from faculty who actively create, exhibit, and teach beyond campus.
  • Your professors stay connected to the professional world, bringing fresh techniques, ideas, and opportunities back to Alfred.
  • Mentorship here lasts, often turning into professional collaborations and career‑boosting connections.
  • Our programs are grounded in real‑world practice, giving students hands‑on, meaningful experiences.

Professor Blood’s ongoing contributions, both on campus and nationally, embody the creative energy that makes Alfred University such a vibrant place to learn, grow, and make your mark.
