Alfred University alumna Lyndsey McCoy ’21 was credited with helping an umpire who was in distress at a recent baseball game in Hornell.
McCoy, a former standout on the Saxon women’s basketball team who earned a bachelor’s degree in athletic training, is an assistant athletic trainer at Alfred University. She also serves as athletic trainer for Hornell High School athletics and for the Hornell Steamers of the New York Collegiate Baseball League.
According to a story in the Hornell Sun, The Steamers were hosting the Olean Oilers for a game at Hornell High School Tuesday evening, July 8, when the home plate umpire was struck in the chest by a foul ball in the top of the first inning. The umpire said he was fine, but after Hornell batted in the bottom of the inning, his head went backward and he collapsed to the ground.
McCoy knew something was wrong even before he fell and immediately sprinted to the Hornell dugout to retrieve an automated external defibrillator and responded to the umpire’s side, where she performed CPR and First Aid. Also assisting was Paul Welker, general manager of the Hornell Steamers, and Josh Sikorski, Olean Oilers athletic trainer.
Local ambulance arrived at the scene within three minutes of the umpire falling and transported him to St. James Hospital in Hornell. He wound up being released from the hospital at around 11 p.m. that night.
McCoy played four seasons (2017-21) for the women’s basketball team at Alfred University. The Middleburgh, NY, native graduated as the program’s career leader in free throw percentage.
