Middle and high school students from six area schools competed in the National History Day Regional Competition hosted by Alfred University on Tuesday, March 10. Students are shown here in Nevins Theater, Powell Campus Center, during Tuesday’s event.

The annual event features middle and high school students competing for a chance to earn a spot in the National History Day State Competition. National History Day (NHD) is a nonprofit education organization which aims to improve the teaching and learning of history.

NHD’s flagship event is the annual competition in which students in grades 6-12 develop presentations about topics in history that interest them. Student presentations at Tuesday’s regional event included papers, websites, performances and posters related to the competition’s theme, which this year is “Revolution, Reaction, Reform in History.”

The following schools were represented in Tuesday’s competition at Alfred University: Avon, Caledonia-Mumford, Canisteo-Greenwood, Honeoye, Houghton Academy, and Pittsford.

The regional competition at Alfred was organized by Alfred University alumnus Chris Romanchock ’02, a grade 7-12 social studies teacher in the Canisteo-Greenwood Central School District. The competition is supported by a partnership with the Admissions Office and Pre-College Programs at Alfred University. Isaac Matson, coordinator of Pre-College Programs at Alfred University, said the university will likely continue to serve as host for future competitions.
