When choosing a college, students and families often ask an important question: Will professors help students connect what they’re learning to the wider world? At Alfred University, the answer is a resounding yes, and our faculty regularly take their expertise far beyond campus.

One recent example is Associate Professor of Dance Colleen Wahl who was invited to present at the 2025 International Somatic Educator and Therapist Association (ISMETA) Conference in Benicàssim, Spain.

Representing Alfred on a Global Stage

The ISMETA conference, titled "Cultivating Connections," brought together movement educators and therapists from around the world to explore how somatic practices build deeper understanding and connection through movement. Held September 26–28, 2025, the conference focused on innovative, body‑based approaches to learning and healing.

Professor Wahl was selected to present a workshop titled "The Wise Counsel of Our Guts," which introduced participants to her Embodied Knowing Model—an approach that helps people understand how movement, awareness, and bodily wisdom inform how we navigate the world.

This work is rooted in her current writing project, "Embodied Wisdom: Navigating Life Through the Moving Body," bringing cutting‑edge scholarship directly into her teaching and workshops.

Commitment to Teaching and Learning

Faculty presentations like this matter because they bring fresh ideas and real‑world expertise back into the classroom. For students studying dance at Alfred University, it means learning from a professor who is:

  • Actively contributing to international conversations in her field
  • Integrating research, teaching, and creative practice
  • Developing new frameworks that shape how movement is studied and taught
  • Connecting classroom learning to global professional communities

These experiences enrich students’ education and help prepare them for careers in movement, education, performance, therapy, and related fields.

In addition to her presentation in Spain, Professor Wahl has continued to share her expertise through residencies and immersive training experiences in movement analysis, highlighting her dedication to lifelong learning and teaching.

For prospective students and families, this reflects what makes Alfred University special: professors who remain deeply engaged in their disciplines and who bring that energy, knowledge, and perspective directly to their students.

Why It Matters

When students choose Alfred University, they learn from faculty who don’t just teach about their fields—they help shape them. Professor Wahl’s international presentation underscores Alfred’s commitment to hands‑on learning, global engagement, and mentorship that extends beyond campus.

It’s one more way Alfred University ensures students are learning from passionate experts who help them see their education as part of a much bigger world.
