When students and families explore colleges, they’re often looking for more than academic programs. They want to know who will be teaching, mentoring, and inspiring them. At Alfred University, our faculty are not only dedicated educators but also nationally recognized artists, scholars, and innovators.

A wonderful example of this is Paul Briggs ’92 M.S.Ed., assistant professor of ceramics in Alfred University’s School of Art and Design, whose work was recently featured in the Winter 2025 issue of American Craft magazine — the publication’s final print edition.

A National Spotlight on an Alfred Artist

American Craft magazine, published by the American Craft Council, highlighted Briggs’ evolving body of work in an article titled “Musings in Clay.” The feature celebrates the depth and character of his ceramic practice, particularly his signature pinched-form vessels, which continue to grow in complexity and expression.

The magazine describes the breadth of his artistic exploration — from delicate, nature-inspired forms to conceptual sculptures examining philosophy and power dynamics. It also shares a favorite phrase Briggs often tells students: “Chase the muse!”

That mantra reflects his belief that meaningful artistic growth comes from constant curiosity and dedication.

A Teacher Who Leads by Example

Paul Briggs headshotAlongside national recognition, Briggs brings an impressive academic foundation to the classroom. He has earned degrees in art education, ceramics, rabbinic literature, educational theory, and more — all supporting his multidisciplinary approach to teaching.

Since joining Alfred University’s faculty in 2023, he has emphasized both technical mastery and creative intention, helping students explore what clay can communicate as both an artistic and expressive medium.

For prospective students, having a professor like Briggs means learning from someone who not only creates meaningful, widely recognized work, but who also believes deeply in helping emerging artists discover their own voice.

Why It Matters

Faculty achievements aren’t just accolades — they shape the student experience. When your professor is:

  • Featured in nationally respected arts publications
  • Actively creating and exhibiting work
  • Committed to pushing the boundaries of their field
  • Passionate about guiding students on their own creative journeys

You gain an education that feels alive, relevant, and connected to the real world.

Briggs’ recognition in American Craft magazine reflects the excellence found throughout Alfred University’s School of Art and Design, a place where students learn from practicing artists who bring their own evolving creative paths into the studio.
