APEX: Health Fitness Management

Peyton VanBibber’s lacrosse prowess garnered AU’s attention when he was still considering colleges. When he chose Alfred, Peyton knew he wanted to channel his efforts into the hands-on clinical work experiences embedded in the Athletic Training program. As he started his study, however, he realized that he wanted to work with athletes and focus on medicine and science. He found the major that combined his goals: Health Fitness Management. Since making that decision, he’s concentrated on strength and conditioning training, exercise science and exercise physiology. He's also been granted an APEX experiential learning internship in these areas.

As students, we only get so much hands-on experience. This internship helped link my classroom learning with real-world applications in the field of strength and conditioning and exercise science.

Peyton interned as a Strength and Training specialist at the team USA Olympic training center in Lake Placid, NY, as part of AU’s APEX program. He comments, "I was able to work under an established and intelligent strength and conditioning coach while being instructed in classroom learning by his assistant, who is on his way to becoming an amazingly prosperous coach."

Since completing his internship, Peyton has seriously considered attending graduate school to further his education. He has yet to choose his course, but after he graduates from AU, Peyton wants to become an exercise physiologist for a professional organization or a division one school. He’s gained some other helpful experiences along the way; in addition to playing for the men’s varsity lacrosse team, he is a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Since AU has a low student-to-faculty ratio, Peyton has also fostered close connections with his professors and peers which will help him gain footing in a highly competitive market.

AU has helped Peyton in areas aside from his academics and professional aspirations. “Alfred,” he says, “has prepared me not only for further education and my professional career, but my experiences here have also helped shape me into a better person.”
