Non-Traditional Students Welcome! Veteran Students Welcome!

As an older, non-traditional student with roots in Corning, NY, Brandon Smith wanted to continue his undergraduate work in-state. He considered SUNY Binghamton as well as RIT, but when he first met with the AU Admissions staff, he knew Alfred was the place best suited to his learning style. “I felt my decision was just as important to the Admissions staff as it was to me, and it made me feel like I was already a member of the AU family,” Brandon says. “After coming into contact with the staff, my mind was made up.”

Alfred has been everything I had hoped it would be. The faculty and staff are always willing to help, and my fellow students have accepted me as an older non-traditional student.

Brandon’s drive to understand how and why things work directed him to the mechanical engineering program. He decided to channel his interests into an education. He hopes to attain a position with one of the local manufacturing companies after he graduates in 2021.

Brandon enjoys interacting with students, faculty and staff members. Learning about everyone’s experiences as well as their differences and similarities reminds him of his time in the military where his fellows also came from all walks of life. Brandon’s military experiences have taught him how to be resilient in all circumstances. He has deployed to Southwest Asia twice and is currently a member of the reserves.
