Wonderfully Weird, Like-Minded People

Research has engaged Kade McGarrity since he started at AU. Unlike large research institutes, Alfred’s curricula, he says, “afforded undergraduates the opportunity for hands-on lab work from year one.” Drawn to a cutting-edge high-risk, high-reward research environment, Kade decided to pursue his PhD in Materials Science and Engineering after earning his BS in 2017.

The independence and responsibility I’ve been given in the lab and the wonderfully weird, like-minded people who are similarly attracted to this place are some of my favorite parts of being an AU student.

Fascinated by unique synthesis techniques and the strict purity requirements of materials, Kade is focusing his studies on extreme environment polymer-derived ceramics. After graduate school, he wants to conduct high-level research on early-stage industrial or fundamental topics that involve extreme environment processes.

“This valley has become an important part of my life,” Kade explains. “There’s a lot of history here, and I’m glad to now be a part of it.”
