Eliott Houghtelling, a rising senior at Alfred University's School of Art and Design and Social Sciences represents the statutory sector of Alfred University on the Student Voices and Action Committee hosted by SUNY. Student Voices and Action Committee was nominated by SOAD Dean Lauren Lake, who worked with Eliott in the spring of 2021 during Co-Space to revitalize the Harder Hall lobby on Alfred's campus. Lake quickly noticed Houghtelling's leadership skills.

The Student Voices and Action Committee is made up of student representatives from SUNY schools across the state who convene several times during the academic year.  The committee is composed of 27 students representing every SUNY sector—from university centers to comprehensive, technical, and community colleges. During these meetings, students are tasked with discussing problems within institutions and potential solutions. Students also are joined by the SUNY chancellor, SUNY trustees, and other system leaders. This open line of communication provides the opportunity to express concerns directly to system leadership.

“It is important for us that our voices are not only heard, but as the name of the committee suggests, that action is taken,” Houghtelling said in receiving Lake’s nomination. “As a queer and trans identifying student, I have fought to advocate for myself and my colleagues. It has been my goal to build these networks that allow for avenues of advocacy and representation. I look forward to continuing my work with SUNY during my senior year, and to see what steps are taken to continue to improve our state institutions."
