ALFRED, NY – An article by S.K. Sundaram, Inamori Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Alfred University, appears as the cover story in the current issue of the American Ceramic Society (ACerS) Bulletin.

Sundaram’s story, titled “First glass: Formation of silicate in the early universe,” appears in the August 2022 issue of the ACerS Bulletin, an issue dedicated to raw materials. Sundaram’s article contemplates when silicate glass first formed in the early universe.

In the article, Sundaram concludes that the oldest glasses date before the formation of the solar system and that the formation of the first silicate glass—which is now the basis for the world’s most commercially important glasses—was likely more than 7 billion years ago.
