MLK Day of Service set for Friday, Jan. 13; Celebration and Brunch is Sunday, Jan. 22

Alfred University will host its annual Martin Luther King Day of Service on Friday, Jan. 13. As part of its observance of Martin Luther King Day, the University will host a Celebration and Brunch on Sunday, Jan. 22.

The theme for the Jan. 13 Day of Service celebration observing the Civil Rights icon’s work is, “It Starts with Me: Cultivating a Beloved Community Mindset to Transform Unjust Systems.” Organizers say the theme “reinforces the knowledge, skills and dispositions students need to not only to be positive contributors to creation of the community” but also to succeed in their respective life paths.

The King Center for Nonviolent Social Change is calling on educational institutions and organizations around the globe to join in a worldwide “Teach-In,” the purpose of which is to educate people of all ages about Dr. Martin Luther and Coretta Scott King’s legacy and how to champion completion of their unfinished work. Organizers encourage people to watch video of King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech, and consider following questions:

  • What would Dr. King be most proud of?
  • What would he be most disappointed in?
  • Would he approve of how we treat one another?
  • What was the greatest challenge he faced?
  • Which lines or phrases from his speech stand out to you?

An MLK Celebration and Brunch, sponsored by the Institute for Cultural Unity, is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 22, from noon to 2 p.m. in the Knight Club, third floor of Powell Campus Center.

After brunch, a short video on Martin Luther King will be shown, followed by an address by keynote speaker Milton Hunt—titled “How much has changed? What would MLK say?”—and a question-and-answer session.
