Sue Herdman ’63 donates collection of artwork, photography to Meskwaki Nation

Sue Herdman ’63, an artist and photographer, recently donated a collection of photographs and original artwork to the Meskwaki Nation, Sac & Fox Tribe of the Mississippi in Iowa. The works, which depict members of the Sac & Fox Tribe, will be displayed in the Meskwaki Tribal Museum in Tama, Iowa.


Herdman earned a B.F.A. degree from Alfred University, studying under renowned Alfred University art faculty including John Wood, Bob Turner, Ted Randall, Kurt Ekdahl, Val Cushing, Don Reitz, Dan Rhodes. She enjoyed a career as an art educator in Davenport, Iowa, before taking up photography, and now works as a travel photographer and graphic artist. susanherdman.com

On Oct. 30, Johnathon Buffalo, historic preservationist for the Meskwaki Museum, received Herdman’s donation, the Meskwaki Archive, which consists of more than 2,000 photographs, negatives and slides, plus framed drawings and paintings dating from 1977 to 1990.

Herdman notes that prints of some of the works contained in the Meskwaki Archive are found in the collections of the Museum of Anthropology, University of California, Chico, CA; the Eiteljorg Museum, Indianapolis, IN; the Heard Museum Library and Archives, Phoenix, AZ; American Indian Center, Chicago, IL; and Deere & Company, Moline IL.
