Artwork by Kevin Wixted, professor of drawing and painting, and chair of the Division of Drawing, Painting and Photography in Alfred University’s School of Art and Design, is displayed in a solo exhibition that opened recently at the American University of Paris.

The exhibition, titled “At Play In The Fields,” opened Feb. 28 at the American University of Paris Fine Arts Gallery and will remain on view through March 23. The exhibition features new paintings by Wixted which have their genesis in the form of on-site watercolor studies done during the artist’s travels throughout the Yucatan Peninsula.

According to Wixted, “Each work begins as an observed meditation on nature, with the artist spending days in the landscape capturing the phenomena of his surroundings.”

The exhibition title, “At Play In The Fields,” is derived from a Peter Matthiessen novel in which modern characters are consumed by the beauty and strangeness of a primordial landscape. It also references a vein of abstraction emphasizing continuous mark making across an expanding picture plane. This new body of work fuses the artist’s direct observations from nature with his long time investigation of color interaction and rhythmic patterning.

Wixted’s work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group shows nationally and internationally including Lohin Geduld Gallery, New York, NY; David Beitzel Gallery, New York, NY; Alpha Gallery, Boston; Thomas Deans Fine Art, Atlanta, GA; and Patricia Shea Gallery, Santa Monica, CA.  His shows have been written about in Artforum, Art in America, ArtNews, The New York Times, Boston Globe, New York Observer, and the Hudson Review among others. His work is represented in public collections including the State Museum of Pennsylvania, Mississippi Museum of Art, Chase Manhattan Bank, General Electric, Hewlett Packard, Noruma Securities, Societe Generale, and Time Warner.

Wixted has been awarded a Pollock-Krasner Grant, New York Foundation for the Arts Grant, an International Fellowship Faculty Grant and the Excellence in Teaching award from Alfred University. Artist residencies include the Cite Internationale des Arts/ Paris, Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, MacDowell Colony, and the Patrick Allen Frazier of Hospitalfield Foundation/ Scotland. He is co-founder of the Alfred/Düsseldorf MFA in Painting Program. Wixted, who earned B.A. and M.A. degrees in studio art from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, lives and works in New York City.
