ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University “Reunion Bikers,” a group of alumni who spend the week preceding Reunion Weekend bicycling to Alfred, announce the addition of a new participant for their 2019 ride.

The inaugural ride, in 1998, had several members of the class of 1958 pedal from Philadelphia to Alfred to join classmates for their 40th alumni reunion. This year will mark the 12th time since that first ride that alumni bicyclists will be pedaling to Alfred for Reunion, scheduled in 2019 for June 7-9. The group also rode in 2003 and 2008 – the year of the Class of 1958’s 50th reunion – before embarking on nine consecutive trips from 2010-18.

The most recent bicyclist to join the 2019 group is Mary Bouchard ’73, a veteran of two previous reunion bike rides. Other bicyclists who recently joined the group for this year’s ride include: Bill Snowden ’69 and Jacqueline Gikow ’69, returning to Alfred University for their 50th alumni reunion; and Carl Dziekan ’79, who will be enjoying his 40th reunion. Peggy Wirth ’87, will ride with the group for a portion of the route along the trails in the Rochester area, where she resides.

The 2019 Reunion Bikers will begin their journey in the Rochester area, spending three days (June 2, 3 and 4) bicycling along the Erie Canal and Genesee Riverway Trails. On Wednesday, June 5, with group will portage to Letchworth State Park, where they will spend two days before departing Friday, June 7, for Hornell. In Hornell, the riders will prepare for their “victory celebration” ride into Alfred to the Alfred University campus and up the hill to the King Alfred statue.

Following is a list of riders who plan to participate in the 2019 event: Larry ’68 and Denise ’69 Ploetz (returning to campus for Denise’s 50th alumni reunion); Roberta Auerbach ’74, David ’77 and Regina Holleb, Jim Randall ’77, and Carolyn Zimlich; and first-time riders Amanda Fazzino ’10, and Dave ’90 and Tracy Fleet. Two founding members of the group, 1958 graduates Russ Fahey and Elliott Lasky, plan to participate in a portion of the 2019 ride. Also, Geoffrey Lowe ’73 will be bicycling solo from Ohio to Alfred, where he will meet up with the Reunion Bikers.

What began in 1998 with a small group of athletically minded alumni from the class of 1958 has evolved into an annual event with a growing following. In 1998, several members of the class of 1958 celebrating for their 40th reunion rode from the Philadelphia area across the Pocono Mountains to Alfred University.  They had so much fun and decided to do it again for their 45th reunion in 2003, and for their 50th reunion in 2008. The ride has become an annual event with a different route chosen each year.

A few of the original riders from the class of 1958, including Roger Eiss, Fahey, Barney Hart, Lasky and Andy Seaman joined the ride in 2018 for their 60th alumni reunion.

Eiss and Dave’61 and Kate Perry had planned on attending this year’s ride. They have regretfully informed organizers that they won’t be able to participate, as they are vacationing in France, where some bicycling activities are planned.

The group welcomes students, alumni and friends to join them on their ride, or for lunch or dinner along the way.  Please contact Jim Randall ’77 (JamesRandallJr@msn.com) for more information.
