The Workshop

Join the Alfred Summer Ceramics four-week Open Studio Intensive, a self-directed opportunity designed for experienced ceramic artists ready to deepen their practice. Participants will have access to both throwing and handbuilding spaces, with demonstrations, artist talks, and one-on-one consultations led by workshop faculty each week. Facilities include a plaster lab, glaze rooms with cone 04 and cone 10 glazes, oxidation and reduction kilns, and access to salt, soda, and wood firings. This immersive experience invites artists to explore personal directions, expand material knowledge, and refine their creative voice within Alfred’s renowned ceramic community.

About the Instructor

Matt Kelleher is Associate Professor and Division Chair of Ceramic Art at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. Before joining the faculty in 2015, he spent a decade as a studio potter in the mountains of North Carolina. His work, grounded in the tradition of soda-fired tableware, has expanded into larger sculptural forms that investigate surface, volume, and gesture. Matt has been a resident artist at Penland School of Crafts, Archie Bray Foundation, Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park, Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute, and Starworks.  

 

Janina MyronovaJanina Myronowa is a Ukrainian-born ceramic artist whose practice reflects the intersections of cultural heritage and contemporary form. She holds MFAs from the Lviv National Academy of Fine Arts (Ukraine) and the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Fine Arts and Design (Poland), where she also earned her PhD. Janina has participated in international residencies including The Clay Studio (Philadelphia), Archie Bray Foundation, and Guldagergaard (Denmark). Her work is recognized for its vibrant narrative quality and material sensitivity.

Youngmi Lee is Assistant Professor of Ceramic Art at Hong-ik University in Seoul, Korea. She holds degrees from Hong-ik University, the Central Institute of Fine Arts in Beijing, and Tsinghua University, where she earned her PhD in Art History. Youngmi has received numerous international awards for ceramic design and continues to exhibit widely across Asia. Her work bridges sculpture, history, and design, reflecting a deep commitment to innovation through material tradition.
