Keeping the campus community engaged is key to building a more sustainable environment. One of Alfred Goes Green’s most popular events is its free clothing swap, a favorite among students. During the event, the club takes over Knight Club in the Powell Campus Center and distributes donated clothing items. This not only gives students the chance to find new outfits or prepare for colder weather, but it also reduces textile waste by keeping clothing out of landfills.
Alfred Goes Green also encourages students to connect with nature as a way to inspire long-term sustainability. Engaging with the environment helps build the passion that drives the club’s mission. This often includes trips to places like the Museum of the Earth in Ithaca, where members can gain a deeper appreciation for the history of life on Earth.
“I joined Alfred Goes Green because I saw a way to combine my passion for the environment with making a positive impact on campus.”
Sam Smit’s passion for nature led her to join Alfred Goes Green. As an Environmental Studies major and the club’s president, she now organizes trips and events while helping build strong connections among members. She says her favorite event is the clothing swap, especially because of the strong response from the Alfred community.
One of her favorite memories is the club’s trip to Pennsylvania’s Grand Canyon, a massive gorge located less than two hours from campus. The vibrant fall foliage lining the canyon walls created an unforgettable experience that brought the group closer together.
One of the most effective ways to support the environment is to start locally. Alfred Goes Green aims to create environmentally conscious students who are empowered to make their surroundings more sustainable. Through hands-on projects and community involvement, the club has already made a meaningful impact on campus and beyond.
Alfred Goes Green holds weekly meetings in the Science Center. For the most up-to-date information on meeting times and locations, students can contact the club at [email protected].
