College isn’t all lectures and homework. One not‑so‑secret ingredient to a well‑rounded college education is gaining hands‑on experience in your field. For mechanical and electrical engineers, this experience is especially important. Alfred University’s Electric Vehicle Club provides students with real‑world experience in a wide range of valuable skills, including welding, electrical work, and teamwork. For the past 10 years, the Electric Vehicle Club has been repairing, restoring, and rebuilding vehicles that run on sustainable energy.

Let's Talk Shop

A photo of a student working on an electric vehicleCody Orzeszek has been a member of the Electric Vehicle Club since his freshman year and became the club’s secretary in the fall of his junior year. As a mechanical engineering major, Cody enjoys the hands‑on experience he gains by working in Alfred University’s Student Engineering Project Lab, or STEP Lab for short.

“It’s like working with big Legos,” he said when describing the club’s work. “It’s easy to understand—it’s very plug and play.”

Cody’s passion for hands‑on projects doesn’t end with the Electric Vehicle Club. He is also actively working to restore Alfred’s Restoration Club. If the club gains enough student interest, members may have the opportunity to work on restoring a vintage Yamaha 650 twin motorcycle.

What's In The Works

The Electric Vehicle Club currently has four vehicles in its possession. Members rotate between these projects, which include a sand rail, a side‑by‑side, a dirt bike, and a snowmobile. The club’s current focus is on the side‑by‑side and the sand rail.

The side‑by‑side is an off‑roading vehicle that is undergoing upgrades to its battery control system. Work on the sand rail is much more intensive. The sand rail is a Volkswagen Beetle that has been stripped down to its frame while it undergoes a full restoration. The club’s rotating pool of projects keeps things fresh and ensures there is always something for members to work on.

Why Their Work Matters

The EV Club helps its members develop valuable skills, whether they are engineering majors or simply passionate about electric vehicles. The club’s work doesn’t just provide opportunities to learn technical skills—it also promotes sustainability through a strong commitment to electric vehicle technology.

Alumni of the Electric Vehicle Club are uniquely prepared to enter the growing electric vehicle industry. As more engineers graduate with hands‑on electric vehicle experience, they help support an industry focused on innovation and environmental sustainability.

How to Get Involved

The Electric Vehicle Club is always looking for new members. Students are encouraged to stop by meetings, with meeting times posted on AU Connect. The club is also present at club fairs and Accepted Students Day events throughout the year.

If you have any questions, check out their website, reach out at [email protected], or follow the club on social media to stay up to date.

The Alfred Difference

For those who join, the Electric Vehicle Club is an integral part of the Alfred University experience. The skills students develop as members stay with them throughout their academic careers and beyond. The club offers a unique opportunity for students to work on ambitious, hands‑on projects they might not otherwise be able to afford or access without the support of Alfred University. Once you’re on campus, consider becoming a member and continuing the club’s tradition of hard work and sustainability.
