You’re Headed to Alfred: Let’s Talk Housing for New Students

Posted By Alfred University

When you've been accepted to Alfred University, you're preparing for an exciting next chapter, and one of the most important steps is figuring out where you’ll live. Whether you’re an incoming student imagining your first residence hall experience or a family member helping navigate next steps, this guide will help you feel confident and prepared as you move through the housing process at AU.

Get Started Early

Once you’ve committed to Alfred University, be sure to complete your housing form as soon as possible. Housing assignments are based on the information you provide, so accuracy and timeliness are key. Housing assignments are based on the information you provide, so accuracy and timeliness are key.

Before accessing the housing portal, students must follow the instructions to activate their official Alfred University email account, which is how the university shares important housing and campus communications.

Once your email is active, you can complete your housing application through the housing portal.

Roommates and Housing Placements

Students have the option to request a roommate directly within the housing application or to connect with other incoming students through ZeeMee, a platform designed to help admitted students build connections before arriving on campus.

Housing placements are based on application responses, so it’s important to complete the form thoughtfully. While housing staff work hard to create great living environments, specific buildings and single rooms are not guaranteed.

Living Options for First-Year Students

Most first-year students live in residence halls such as Barresi, CannonKruson, Moskowitz, and Tefft. Alfred University also offers Living-Learning Communities (Creativity & Innovation, Sustainability, Community Engagement, and Wellness) as well as Gender Inclusive Housing, which can be selected during the housing application.

Students are required to live on campus for a minimum of three years (six semesters). After fulfilling this requirement, students may apply for an off-campus housing waiver if they meet academic and conduct standards or qualify for an approved exception.

Preparing for Move-In

Residence hall beds require Twin XL bedding. Many students choose services like Dormify for dorm essentials. Students can view a full list of what to bring and what not to bring on the Residence Life page of our website.

Important Move‑In Dates

For the fall semester, all new students can typically move in the third week of August, which tends to be the week before classes begin. Student athletes playing fall sports may receive an earlier move-in date, so it’s helpful to connect with coaches to confirm the details.

Additional Accommodations and Insurance

Students who might need housing accommodations are encouraged to fill out the Disability Housing Accommodation Request Form after depositing. Students are strongly encouraged to carry renter’s insurance while living on campus.

If you have questions or need assistance, Alfred University’s housing team is here to help. We look forward to welcoming you to campus and helping you feel right at home at AU.
