Tavche Gravche bringing its Balkan-flamenco-jazz sound to Miller Theater

Alfred University (AU) welcomes Tavche Gravche, a multi-national Balkan, flamenco, and jazz-infused acoustic ensemble, to Miller Theater at 7:30  p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17 for a free public concert. the event,sponsored by Hillel at Alfred, is free.

Tavche Gravche combines traditional and original Macedonian and Mediterranean sounds, creating dynamic music with explosive danceable rhythms and the energy of Balkan music. Reviewers note the group pushes the boundaries of its unique blend of cultures, rhythms, and colors to become an all-encompassing adventure for the listener.

AU welcomes Chinese digital print/photographers for weeklong visit

The Alfred University (AU) Division of Expanded Media, The Institute for Electronic Arts (IEA), and the Fosdick Nelson Gallery will host two of China’s most important contemporary digital print/photographers Tuesday, Oct. 6 at 6 p.m. in Nevins Theater, Powell Campus Center for a free public lecture. 

In addition to their evening program, Chi Peng and Yao Lu will be visiting and working with IEA students and faculty in the School of Art and Design during the week of Oct. 5.

2015 Lefkowtiz lecturer Moore to explore 'Urban Origins of American Judaism'

Dr. Deborah Dash Moore, an internationally respected historian of American Jewish history, will deliver the 2015 Leonard and Saradona Lefkowitz Lecture in Jewish Studies at Alfred University (AU) on Monday, Oct. 19, at 5:30 p.m.

“Urban Origins of American Judaism,” a public lecture sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, will be in Nevins Theater, Powell Campus Center; admission is free.

Performing Arts bringing diverse musical style of strings duo Dez Cordas to campus

The Alfred University (AU) Division of Performing Arts presents Dez Cordas (Ten Strings), Saturday, Oct. 3, at 7:30 p.m. in Howell Hall, on campus. The recital is free and open to the public.

Dez Cordas is an unusual duo featuring double bassist Craig Butterfield and guitarist Matthew Slotkin. Both musicians are classically trained yet show their diverse musical roots in pieces by South American composer Astor Piazzolla, jazz pianist Chick Corea, Hungarian composer Bele Bartok, and their own original works. The musical experience of a Dez Cordas concert is a melting pot of the individual musical influences of both Butterfield and Slotkin.
