Pre-College Programs

All tuition is due in the CampDoc Registration form by June 1, 2026. 

Every portion of the registration form is required to be filled out prior to a student attending an Alfred University Pre-College Program.

To fill out the medical section of the CampDoc registration form, you may be asked to provide a student's vaccination record. Contacting a student's High School Medical Office or Primary Care Physician is usually the quickest method to find this information.

All prescribed and over-the-counter medications must be listed in the medications section of the CampDoc registration form and signed by parent and healthcare provider. This includes any medications (such as Tylenol, Benadryl, Ibuprofen, etc.) that the student brings and may utilize during their time at Alfred University.

All medications are turned into the Medical Director during check-in at the beginning of the program. They will be given out at as needed during breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as prior to lights out each night.

A COVID-19 vaccine is not required to attend one of our programs.

Check in for each program runs from 2 to 3 p.m. on Sundays. Alternate arrival times can be arranged by request by contacting the Pre-College Programs Coordinator.

Check-out is on the Friday of each program from 2 to 3 p.m. There is also an optional early check-out between 12 and 1 p.m. The only exception to the Friday check-out is in the week of July 4, when check-out is on Thursday instead of Friday at the same time.

Alfred University is 81 miles from Rochester and 90 miles from Buffalo. The most convenient way to get to Alfred is by car, however, the closest airport in Rochester is approximately an hour and twenty minutes from town. The Buffalo airport is just over two hours and is the second-closest option.

We do not currently allow students to stay in the residence halls on the weekend prior to the start date of their specific program. The Saxon Inn, the university's hotel on-campus, has offered a discount to all students that would like to stay over the weekend. Contact the Pre-College Programs coordinator for further information. There is also other weekend housing available through Airbnb.

During the program, each floor of the residence halls will have at least two camp counselors living in a separate room from the students. The Medical Director and Pre-College Coordinator will also live on campus for the duration of the program.

Alfred University’s Pre-College Programs are registered as a children’s camp in the State of New York; thus, we have certain state requirements that we follow to ensure the safety and well-being of students. The following is an annotated list of the guidelines that are mandated by New York State, as well as additional measures that we have implemented as a university:

• Program Director – the Pre-College Programs Coordinator who is both responsible for the wellbeing of the students on campus but is also the direct supervisor of the Camp Counselors. In addition, they are the primary contact for students wishing to attend a Pre-College Program at Alfred University.
• Medical Director – a certified nurse who serves as our medical director, handling the storage and distribution of medications for students throughout the program. Also, the primary staff member responsible for triaging injuries and sickness among the students.
• Camp Counselors – current undergraduate students at Alfred University who are both guides and mentors for the students. There is a ration of 1:10 counselors to students during the program. All counselors are certified in CPR/First Aid as well as Mental Health First Aid.
• Alfred University Public Safety Department – a 24/7 department that provides support for all students and staff members on campus.

Students will receive a schedule in May through CampDoc for their program detailing material covered in class, evening activities, mealtimes, etc.

The weather in Alfred during the summer can be variable, with lows in the 50s and highs in the 90s. Pack appropriately for weather situations, including rain. Also, ensure that comfortable shoes are available as there is a significant amount of walking around campus that takes place during the week. There will be a detailed packing list specific to each program that will be sent out through CampDoc in May.

The total number of hours of instruction is dependent on the specific program, but students should expect between 6 and 8 hours of instruction, labs, and/or practice each day. 

All work that students do is confined to dedicated instructional periods, which means there is no other required activity outside of the classroom. For recreation each week, we will offer a variety of activities for students in the evenings, ranging from a night at Foster Lake, to a silent book club, crafts, games, and even a tour of the restaurants and shops in the Village of Alfred.
