First-Generation Student to Non-Profit Executive

David “D.J.” Hampton II chose to attend Alfred University as a first-generation college student because of the small-town charm and the high-quality education it was well-known for. In 2000 he graduated with a Biology/Pre-Med undergraduate degree, and later with a Community Service Administration graduate degree in 2001.

Alfred peeled back a layer of the world and made me realize how little I knew about it. Because of it, I have spent my life trying to learn more about people who are different than me and to build bridges wherever I can.

After a trip to South America, David realized first-hand the inequalities that exist back in the US, including his privilege as a first-generation college student. He decided at that point he would focus his career path toward leadership in non-profit organizations with a focus on stewardship and philanthropy. He is now a non-profit executive specializing in strategic planning, training, executive coaching, transformation, donor engagement, and managing system change in complex non-profits.

It started at AU. Throughout his time here, D.J. enjoyed the professors, students, history and the connection to nature that Alfred brought him. And his story is not unlike so many others: D.J. recognized early on that our small University meant big things for him, his family, and the world.
