Beryl Torthe found the diversity Alfred fostered impressive when she began considering colleges. Despite its small student population, many people at AU come from all over the nation and the world. Raised in the sprawling, urban environment of Pretoria, South Africa, Beryl worried about culture shock and homesickness when she decided to attend.

I found myself yearning for AU when I was home, and now that I’m in graduate school, I’m still nostalgic for my time on campus. I felt and still feel like some of the most important people in my life have either graduated from Alfred or are linked back to Alfred in some way.

Beryl looked forward to experiencing an American classroom setting and making friends. She also eagerly anticipated her first “real winter.” Her wish was granted, and during blizzards, she reminisced about the weather in South Africa. However, she came to appreciate the change of seasons, calling it “truly a magical experience.” She recalls her first Thanksgiving, Halloween, and Groundhog Day as some of her fondest memories of Alfred.

Beryl graduated with a BA in psychology in 2018 and is currently pursuing a graduate degree. The lack of taboos in psychology as well as the field’s commitment to improving the human experience is what Beryl finds most rewarding about her studies. She enjoys addressing social issues in a candid, direct manner.
