Research Abroad Through APEX

Mariah Addis, a senior ceramics student, hopes she can go to Shigaraki, Japan, as part of AU’s Artist in Residence program. The program will give her more opportunities to learn and collaborate with others in a field she’s passionate about and enhance her knowledge through travel. Mariah acquired some experience abroad through an APEX program; she ventured to Columbia with AU Faculty.

Traveling and learning abroad alongside my professors and colleagues was an unparalleled opportunity that has grown my professional network and refined my career path as a ceramic artist. This experience improved my knowledge of Columbian ceramics and ignited new views and ideas of art.

In her time as a student here, Mariah has learned beside experienced faculty members, worked in state-of-the-art research facilities, and studied material research and resources–all factors which contributed to her initial decision to enroll in the program.

She’s eager to begin her long-term goal of becoming a successful ceramicist. “To me,” Mariah explains, “ceramic art is the richest dialog in world art. It’s a 26,000-year enterprise of human expression and metaphor.”
