Academic & Environmental Purpose

Foster Lake isn’t just for relaxation—it's an outdoor classroom. Since being acquired by the University in 2002, the site has become a valuable space for biology, environmental science, ecology, and sustainability research. Students and faculty use the lake and surrounding land for everything from water quality studies to bird habitat surveys.

The surrounding woods, reforested beginning in the 1950s, continue to thrive today, offering a real-world example of ecological recovery and long-term land stewardship.

Recreation & Relaxation

Foster Lake is also open to the Alfred community for seasonal recreational use. Activities include:

  • Swimming (during supervised hours with lifeguards)
  • Fishing
  • Bird watching
  • Canoeing and small craft sailing
  • Picnicking at designated lakeside spots
  • Hiking & walking trails that circle the lake

Whether you're looking for a quiet place to reflect, a trail to explore, or a chance to dip your feet in the water, Foster Lake offers something for everyone.
