Alfred University’s School of Art and Design recently served as adjudicator for the Western New York Scholastic Art Awards competition, which received more than 400 entries from 230 high school-age students living in the 13 counties of western New York.

William Underhill, renowned sculptor and emeritus professor at Alfred University who cast the King Alfred Statue located in the center of campus, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 16. Underhill was 88 and living in Wellsville, NY, at the time of his death.

School of Art & Design and Performing Arts Division IDEA Lab is online. IDEA Lab is an overarching umbrella for cultivating a diverse and inclusive environment providing co-teaching and co-learning experiences as part of an Anti-Racist Program at the School of Art and Design and Performing Arts Division at Alfred University.

The Confucius Institute at Alfred University (CIAU) will present the next East Meets West Concert and Discussion at 8 pm Tuesday, Feb. 15: How Western Music Came to China, and How Chinese Music was Introduced to the Western World.

The Weekly Wednesday Artists’ Speaker Series at Alfred University continues on Wednesday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m. in Holmes Theater, Harder Hall, with a lecture by Liet Heringa and Maarten Van Kalsbeek, who are serving this semester as International Randall Chairs of Ceramic Art.

The 2022 Alfred Art Walk series begins Thursday, Feb. 17, from 5 to 8 pm, and will continue with Alfred-area art exhibitions on the third Thursday of every month.

Alfred University’s Cohen Gallery, located on Main Street in the Village of Alfred, will open the exhibition I5olation: A Portfolio of 50 Drawings x 50 Women Sculptors During COVID, on Jan. 21 and extending through Feb. 21.

Alfred University’s Cohen Gallery will host Drawing Community Project, a community-based drawing exhibition, and invites anyone who would like to participate to submit an 11” x 14” drawing on the theme of Reconnection.

The Division of Performing Arts at Alfred University will present “An Evening of Dance” on Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 17, 18, and 19, in Miller Theater. The performances, which will be presented at 8 p.m. each evening, will feature live performances with integrated mixed media.

Alfred University’s Miller Theater is hosting the 2019 Prague Quadrennial USA Exhibition, a collection of some of the finest artistic achievement presented in the United States between 2015 and 2019. The exhibit appears in the Miller Theater Scenography Gallery, located on the first floor of the Miller Theater.

During the Month of February 2022 Alfred University School of Art and Design and Sculpture / Dimensional Studies will host glass artists who hail from the afro diaspora. Each week an Artist working with glass will lead workshops and lecture on their work and experience.

The inaugural Black Glass Artist Series welcomes three glass artists of color to the Alfred University campus for one-week residencies during the month of February, which is celebrated as Black History Month. The visiting artists present artist talks and give demonstrations of their practice in the Alfred University School of Art and Design’s Hot Glass Shop.

Alfred University’s Fosdick-Nelson Gallery, located in Harder Hall, will open the exhibition Signals of Agency, on Friday, Feb. 18. The exhibition is curated by Eric Souther and features artwork by Jason Bernagozzi, Sabrina Ratte, Benjamin Rosenthal and Marcos Serafim.

QuAC, the Queer Art Collective hosts an exhibition and auction entitled Occupied from February 25 – March 18, 2022, in the Robert C. Turner Gallery. QuAC is seeking submissions from queer artists of the Alfred community. All members of the LGBTQIA+ community and allies are encouraged to submit works. This includes faculty, staff, community members, and alumnx.

The Division of Ceramic Art will host its annual NCECA reception at the Mill Station Arts and Culture Center, Sacramento, CA on Friday, March 18, 2022 (PT) during the 56th Conference of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts. The Alfred Reception is complimentary and open to all Alfred alumni and friends. For those who cannot join in person, a Zoom option is available. Registration information coming soon.

Alfred University Professor of Sculpture Coral Lambert has been awarded the 2022 Outstanding Educator Award of the International Sculpture Center (ISC), based in Hamilton, NJ.

Alfred University fourth-year student Kirstin VanRenselaar recently captured acting honors at the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival’s Region 2 competition. VanRenselaar was honored for her work in classical acting.

Wayne Higby’s ceramic art work Sun Rim Canyon will be featured in the reinstallation of the Mint Museum Uptown’s permanent collection, which opens Feb. 12, 2022. The Mint Museum Uptown is part of the Levine Center for the Arts, located in Charlotte, NC.

Xu Yibao '17 M.F.A. recently oversaw through White·Tech Media Lab a large kinetic installation in Chongli Hall for the China 2022 Winter Olympics.
