Founded in 1836, Alfred University opened as a co-educational institution, offering equal rights and privileges to the 22 women and 15 men who had enrolled. This means Alfred University became one of the first higher education institution to be fully open to women.
Alfred University is a private, non-sectarian institution, with state-sponsored programs in engineering and art and design.
Alfred University is located in Alfred, New York, a village in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains. It is about 40 minutes west of Corning, 70 minutes south of Rochester and two hours from Buffalo.
About 1,700 undergraduates and nearly 400 graduate students from 43 states and 16 countries attend Alfred University and live in Alfred full-time. We have approximately 90 additional part-time graduate students, and 475 graduate students enrolled in our AUNY NYC-metro area programs.
Alfred University is a 232-acre campus with more than 50 academic and residential buildings comprise a vibrant, student-centered living and learning community. Nearly 800 additional acres of recreational land accommodate the Saxon Hill Sports Complex, the Maris Cuneo Equine Park, and Foster Lake.
100% of domestic students are offered funding through Alfred University scholarships and grants, and more than 95% of the entering first year class receives some type of financial assistance between university, federal, state, and private resources.
Surveys of Alfred University graduates consistently reveal that one year after graduation, 98% of our students land jobs or are attending graduate school.
