Modern Band: A Hands-On Professional Development Workshop for High School Music Teachers

Date: May 13, 2026

This workshop introduces high school music teachers to Modern Band through collaborative, hands‑on music-making. Led by Dr. Hannah Porter Denecke and Dr. Matias Homar, participants engage in flexible, popular music–style ensembles that emphasize learning by ear, minimal notation, inclusive instrumentation, and nontraditional rehearsal practices. The session highlights practical strategies for adapting instruction to varied ensemble sizes, skill levels, and musical backgrounds while rethinking genre boundaries as flexible and contextual.

Body, Landscape & the Creative Process in Coastal Maine

Dates: June 1 - 5, 2026

Rediscover creativity through movement and nature in this immersive residency-workshop set on the coast of Maine. Each morning begins with guided somatic movement practice to connect body and mind. Afternoons invite reflection and creative work — writing, drawing, dancing, or painting — inspired by excursions into the region’s breathtaking landscape. Through embodied awareness, participants will unlock new insights in their creative process and return home with fresh inspiration and renewed energy.

Ceramic Wood Firing Intensive

Dates: July 6 - 17, 2026

Explore the elemental beauty of wood firing in this two-week intensive led by master potter Jack Troy. Participants will fire in two distinct wood kilns, learning through hands-on practice, demonstrations, and discussions of firing history and aesthetics. The workshop begins with forming and glazing sessions, followed by the loading and firing of both train and cross-draft kilns. Expect to dive deep into shino glazes, natural ash surfaces, and the alchemy of flame.

Experimental Print Residency

Dates: July 6 - 17, 2026

This intensive residency invites artists to experiment across print, digital, and time-based media to expand their visual language. Participants will explore how digital processes — from laser cutting to dye-sublimation and screen printing — can merge with analog methods such as monotype, etching, and woodblock. Through guided experimentation and individualized critique, artists will develop hybrid works that challenge traditional definitions of the printed image.

Plaster (r)evolution

Dates: July 6 - 17, 2026

Unlock the creative potential of plaster in this hands-on exploration of mold making and form development. Plaster (r)evolution guides participants through processes that transform prototypes into multiples — discovering how repetition can inspire reinvention. From mixing and pouring to carving, casting, and turning, you’ll learn techniques that bridge sculpture, design, and functional making. Emphasis will be placed on experimentation, play, and the evolution of ideas, culminating in a soda or salt firing that brings your work to life.

Ceramic Open Studio Intensive

Dates: July 6 - 31, 2026

Alfred Summer Ceramics four-week Open Studio Intensive, is designed for experienced ceramic artists ready to deepen their practice. Participants will have access to both throwing and handbuilding spaces, with demonstrations, artist talks, and one-on-one consultations led by workshop faculty each week. Facilities include a plaster lab, glaze rooms with cone 04 and cone 10 glazes, oxidation and reduction kilns, and access to salt, soda, and wood firings. This immersive experience invites artists to explore personal directions, expand material knowledge, and refine their creative voice within Alfred’s renowned ceramic community.

Ceramic Science for the Artist: Cone 6

Dates: July 13 - 17, 2026

In this five-day intensive, which blends science with studio experimentation. Participants will mix and test daily glaze batches, learning to understand the relationships between materials, temperature, and color response. Working primarily at cone 6, artists will develop new formulas, troubleshoot glaze defects, and map their discoveries using the Stull chart. Students will leave with a deeper understanding of how chemistry can enhance artistic expression.
