For Alfred University ceramic engineering student Ruby Kavanagh ’27, an internship at Corning Incorporated offered a chance to put her classroom knowledge to work and discover just how many industries rely on materials science and engineering.
"Corning really taught me a lot about how materials science and engineering fit into the world of technology and put into perspective just how many industries really need well-engineered materials," Ruby shared.
Throughout her internship, Ruby worked with a variety of ceramic characterization and processing techniques, building on the knowledge and skills she has developed at Alfred.
She also discovered career possibilities she hadn't previously considered.
"I got to learn so much about what kinds of jobs are out there, from staff scientist to engineering manager to designer, and more," she said. "It has helped me when thinking about what trajectory I want to point my career towards."
Ruby also attended networking events and connected with professionals throughout the company, gaining insight into different roles and career paths.
