The Program

We want to be people of joy—to make lives of peace—to create meaningful, supportive connections with each other. Despite our best intentions, however, stress, anxiety, and loneliness have reached epidemic levels in contemporary society--especially among teenagers and young adults. So how do we respond? How do we make better choices, and live them?

The new science of mindfulness and the ancient art of meditation are two of the best answers we have. Yet despite their proven benefits and surging popularity, schools integrating these skills into their curriculum are all too rare. So how can students learn and practice them?

Alfred University provides the perfect retreat from accumulating demands, and distractions that divert attention without cultivating either lasting relief or real happiness. In this course, your instructor will facilitate, and our group will practice together, a variety of mindfulness and meditation techniques, including open and guided, in silence and sound, mind-and-body, immersion in nature (we have hiking trails and Foster Lake!), self-expression through paint, clay, writing, dance, collage and other media, conversation, and simply being together with what is and each other, holding space.
