For Dominic Wilcox ’24, MBA ’26, earning an associate degree was only the beginning of his academic journey. As a first-generation college student financing his own education, he knew every decision mattered. What he didn't know then was that the university he once believed was out of reach would become the place where he found his community, discovered new opportunities, and built the foundation for his future.

Dominic began his college career at Jamestown Community College, where he distinguished himself academically while making meaningful contributions to campus life. He helped launch the college's Esports program, supported faculty and staff during the COVID-19 pandemic, and earned membership in Phi Theta Kappa, one of the highest honors for community college students. Those experiences and his academic success prepared him for the next step toward earning a bachelor's degree.

Finding His Place at Alfred

Like many transfer students, Dominic was searching for more than a degree. He wanted a university where he could build relationships, gain hands-on experience, and feel supported as he pursued his goals. After exploring different paths, he found exactly that at Alfred University.

"Within my first month at Alfred, I had already built connections with faculty and staff that opened doors I never expected," Dominic says. "I finally found a place where I felt supported and where people genuinely wanted to see me succeed."

Those connections quickly turned into opportunities. During his time at Alfred University's College of Business as a marketing major, Dominic secured multiple internships and campus positions that expanded his professional experience and helped him build leadership, marketing, and communication skills. He contributed during the early stages of the University's Entrepreneurship program and gained real-world experience working with the marketing team, building a portfolio that prepared him for the next chapter of his career.

For Dominic, Alfred University's close-knit community made all the difference. Small class sizes, approachable faculty, and personalized mentorship created an environment where he could ask questions, explore new ideas, and grow both personally and professionally.

Today, Dominic works as an admissions counselor at Alfred University, helping prospective students explore the same opportunities that shaped his own college experience. His journey from transfer student to university staff member reflects the lasting impact of the connections he made at Alfred.

Dominic's journey demonstrates that transferring can be more than a change of schools; it can be the beginning of new possibilities. His experience also challenges a common misconception. Although he initially assumed a private university would be beyond his financial reach, Alfred University proved to be one of his most affordable options, making it possible to pursue the education and opportunities he had always hoped for.

"I came to Alfred looking for a place where I could grow," Dominic reflects. "What I found was a community that believed in me and gave me opportunities I never imagined."

At Alfred University, transfer students don't just continue their education; they become part of a community that helps them thrive.
