Now in its 125th year, the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University has been a unique public/private partnership in higher education since its inception in 1900. The program attracts renowned artists and scientists as faculty in ceramics, glass and other materials, while producing world-class alumni in engineering and groundbreaking artists across all media.

Schools & Studios

Inamori School of Engineering

The Inamori School of Engineering is one of only two institutions in the US that offer a BS in Ceramic Engineering and the only institution in the US that offers degrees in glass science. We offer undergraduate and graduate degrees in Biomaterials Engineering (BS and MS), Ceramic Engineering (BS through PhD), Glass Engineering Science (BS through PhD) and Materials Science and Engineering (BS through PhD).

School of Art and Design

The School of Art and Design’s MFA programs are ranked by US News and World report among the top eleven programs overall, with individual programs: Ceramics (#1), Glass (#2), and Sculpture (#15). We offer the BFA degree, the BS degree in art history, the MFA degree in Ceramic Art, MFA degree in Sculpture/Dimensional Studies, MFA degree in Painting and the MFA degree in Electronic Integrated Art. Alfred University is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD).

Scholes Library

The Scholes Library houses an extensive collection covering the art, science, technology, and history of ceramics and glass. Our focus on glass and ceramics is further expressed in the activities of the Inamori-Kyocera Fine Ceramic Museum, the Alfred Ceramic Art Museum, the Paul Vickers Gardner Glass Center, and the Center for Advanced Ceramic Technology.

Digital Lab

The Digital Lab at Alfred University is a state-of-the-art facility that serves as a creative and innovative hub for students, faculty and staff from both the School of Art and Design and the Inamori School of Engineering.

Alfred University's CACT is one of 15 Centers for Advanced Technology located across New York State created to speed technology transfer from universities to the marketplace.
