Alfred University Professor Emeritus L. David Pye received the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters at a ceremony Saturday in Holmes Auditorium. Pye received his bachelor’s and doctoral degrees in ceramic science from Alfred University in 1959 and 1968. He joined the faculty of the New York State College of Ceramics (NYSCC) at Alfred University in 1968, beginning an academic career that lasted through 2002 and included serving as dean of NYSCC.

Alfred University last week opened the long-awaited Paul Vickers Gardner Glass Center, on the second floor of Binns-Merrill Hall, celebrating the work of Gardner, a 1930 graduate of Alfred University and the Smithsonian Institution’s first Curator of Ceramics and Glass. In his early adult years, Gardner served also as assistant to glass designer Frederick Carder, co-founder of Steuben Glass Works, in Corning NY.

The Alfred Ceramic Art Museum will celebrate the 125th anniversary of the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University with a comprehensive exhibition titled History: A Legacy in Motion, Alfred Ceramic Art 1900 -2025. The exhibition which will be on view May 8 – December 14, 2025, will open for a first viewing reception on May 8 from 5 -7 pm. The public is invited to join in celebration of this historic occasion.

The Center for Advanced Ceramic Technology (CACT) at Alfred University has been renewed for four years with a new $5 million contract from New York State, Gabrielle Gaustad ’04, dean of the Inamori School of Engineering at Alfred University has announced. In addition, Gaustad said David Gottfried has been promoted to director of the CACT, effective July 1.

Examples of the travel photojournalism of the late Caroline Littell of Alfred will be on view May 2 through June 26 in the main-floor gallery of Alfred University’s Scholes Library. For a time in the late 1970s, Littell was employed at Alfred University as director of the school’s language laboratory and overseas study program. She died in Pasadena, CA, in 2015.

Allegany County Startup Collegiate Competition, scheduled for Saturday, April 6, teams of students from Alfred University and Alfred State College will present their ideas for creating a new business. Winning teams will be awarded cash prizes, which can be uses to put their business plans into action.
