Alfred University Professor Emeritus L. David Pye received the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters at a ceremony Saturday in Holmes Auditorium. Pye received his bachelor’s and doctoral degrees in ceramic science from Alfred University in 1959 and 1968. He joined the faculty of the New York State College of Ceramics (NYSCC) at Alfred University in 1968, beginning an academic career that lasted through 2002 and included serving as dean of NYSCC.

The facility was officially named the Cohen National Casting Center Foundry, in honor of Michele Cohen HD '18, Alfred University trustee, and her husband, Martin, whose $6 million gift made the foundry project possible.

In his early adult years, Gardner served also as assistant to glass designer Frederick Carder, co-founder of Steuben Glass Works, in Corning NY.

Teams of students from Alfred University claimed the first- and second-place prizes in the fourth annual AHA! Allegany County Startup Collegiate Competition, held Saturday, April 6, on the Alfred University campus. Five teams from Alfred University and three from Alfred State College presented their ideas for creating a new business to a panel of three judges. Winning teams were awarded cash prizes, which can be used to put their business plans into action.

Glass scientists at Alfred University, in a partnership with New York State and Vitricity, a consulting company focused on promoting sustainability in the glass industry, are studying ways to wash and reuse wine bottles. The project could remove tens of thousands of wine bottles from the waste stream each year while helping Finger Lakes Region wine producers realize significant savings.

Alfred University has been awarded a $466,853 grant from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) which will support student internships and fund a program that provides short course training for renewable energy engineering students and workers in the electric utilities field. The University has also received a donation from GE Vernova of $786,000 in grid planning and operations software to support the NYSERDA-funded project.
