Alfred University’s Department of Music welcomed a captivated audience to Susan Howell Hall on Saturday, November 15, for a vibrant and artistically rich guest artist recital featuring flutist Jeanne Sperber, current adjunct flute professor at Alfred University, and pianist Michael Salmirs. The event was made possible through the generous support of the David and Elizabeth Graves Miller Fund for Performing Arts.

An Alfred University faculty member and student participated in the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Annual Convention and World Languages Expo, held Nov. 20-22 in New Orleans. The conference is the most influential gathering for world language educators in the United States.

Alfred University’s  Performing Arts Division this week welcomed more than 400 western New York high school students and their teachers for an immersive educational experience centered around Shakespeare’s Macbeth, which was performed last weekend in Miller Theater and will be performed also Friday, Oct. 31, and Saturday Nov. 1.

Alfred University students last week explored their future steps into the professional world through two events hosted recently by the Career Development Center: the Graduate and Professional School Fair on Sept. 18 and the fall Job and Internship Fair on Sept. 25. Altogether, the fairs drew more than 320 students representing more than 40 different majors.

Alfred University Professor Emeritus L. David Pye received the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters at a ceremony Saturday in Holmes Auditorium. Pye received his bachelor’s and doctoral degrees in ceramic science from Alfred University in 1959 and 1968. He joined the faculty of the New York State College of Ceramics (NYSCC) at Alfred University in 1968, beginning an academic career that lasted through 2002 and included serving as dean of NYSCC.

Riley Lectureship in Women's Studies Monday in Alfred University’s Nevins Theater, telling a near-capacity audience, “Making art is doing something. …You get better at what you do; you find collaborators, you find your voice and your theme. If you’re making something, you’re doing something.”

The ensemble, entering its ninth year, plays modern chamber music, much of it written by composers writing specifically for the group.

Alfred University has added five new Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees, effective for the 2025-26 academic year. Interdisciplinary BFA programs in music-performance, music-sound studies, theatre, performance design and technology, and dance will be housed in the Performing Arts Division.

Aaron Vit ’21, an Alfred University alumnus who studied mechanical engineering in the Inamori School of Engineering, will join the Alfred University String Orchestra Friday night, in Miller Theater, where the orchestra will present an eclectic program ranging from the Baroque era to the modern period and including works by Vivaldi, Michael Haydn, Shostakovich, and Scott Joplin.

Fifteen-year-old Jonathan Mei of Charleston, SC is the 2024 Grand Prize Winner in Alfred University’s MostArts Young Pianist Competition. Mei, a student at Charleston’s Academic Magnet High School, took home a $10,000 prize at the conclusion of the MostArts Festival, in Alfred, NY, Saturday, July 20.
