That mindset led Sean, a sophomore at Alfred University and a member of the men’s swimming and diving team, to make significant improvements to timing-scoring system and audio-video capabilities at the McLane Center swimming pool, saving the university thousands.

At Tuesday’s annual Holiday Luncheon, Alfred University recognized recipients of the university’s Fiat Lux! Awards. The awards were established in 2016 by Mark Zupan, university president, to honor people who bring distinction to Alfred University. The 2025 Fiat Lux! winners—Garret Eldridge, head men’s soccer coach; Andy Eklund, professor of chemistry; and Paul May, regional associate director of admissions, Albany/New England—exemplify Alfred University’s three core strengths: mentorship, intersections, and inclusivity.

She had an interesting connection with the university’s School of Art & Design, as both her parents had studied art here and she was born – literally – in Harder Hall, while her mother waited for an ambulance to take her to the hospital.

In 2019, Alfred University student Angela Vanbuskirk ’20 produced the Anthology of British Literature: From the Restoration to Modernism, a project for English Professor Allen Grove’s Publishing Practicum course, offered in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Vanbuskirk’s anthology traces English literature from the restoration of King Charles II in the 17th century to the 20th century and the advent of modernism.

She is exploring the sociology of those harvests in her First Year Experience class, The Sociology of Food, and she recently invited her students, Alfred University faculty and administrators, and friends in the larger Alfred community to an autumn cookout (“Soupstock 2025”) in her Alfred village backyard – invoking some of the traditions of her youth.

Alfred University Professor Emeritus L. David Pye received the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters at a ceremony Saturday in Holmes Auditorium. Pye received his bachelor’s and doctoral degrees in ceramic science from Alfred University in 1959 and 1968. He joined the faculty of the New York State College of Ceramics (NYSCC) at Alfred University in 1968, beginning an academic career that lasted through 2002 and included serving as dean of NYSCC.

New astronomy minor invites more students to study the stars

Alfred University is home to the Stull Observatory and its seven independent telescopes, but relatively few students have chosen to take advantage of those resources in the form of a minor in astronomy. In the last 15 years, according to Assistant Professor of Astronomy Connor Robinson, fewer than five students have chosen to minor in the physics- and math-intensive subject.
