Alfred University student Sean Killian describes himself as inquisitive by nature, with a desire to learn how things work and how they can be improved. That mindset led Sean, a sophomore at Alfred University and a member of the men’s swimming and diving team, to make significant improvements to timing-scoring system and audio-video capabilities at the McLane Center swimming pool, saving the university thousands.

The awards were established in 2016 by Mark Zupan, university president, to honor people who bring distinction to Alfred University. Alfred University Assistant Professor of Geology Kristian Olson met undergraduate Piper Moore in his Structural Geology class in 2024. Piper was an art student in her third year at Alfred. In 2019, Alfred University student Angela Vanbuskirk ’20 produced the Anthology of British Literature: From the Restoration to Modernism, a project for English Professor Allen Grove’s Publishing Practicum course, offered in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Vanbuskirk’s anthology traces English literature from the restoration of King Charles II in the 17th century to the 20th century and the advent of modernism.

Pye received his bachelor’s and doctoral degrees in ceramic science from Alfred University in 1959 and 1968. He joined the faculty of the New York State College of Ceramics (NYSCC) at Alfred University in 1968, beginning an academic career that lasted through 2002 and included serving as dean of NYSCC.

In his early adult years, Gardner served also as assistant to glass designer Frederick Carder, co-founder of Steuben Glass Works, in Corning NY.

As an undergraduate biology major at Alfred University in the early 2000s, Ross Munson took a plant biology class taught by Cheryld Emmons which included the study of photosynthesis. For the last nine years Munson, now a high school biology teacher in the Wellsville Central School District, has brought a group of his students to campus to take a day-long workshop and experience what it is like to learn in a college environment.
